About this camp

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a four-week, residential program designed for academically talented North Carolina high school students interested in STEM careers. Participants engage in hands-on research, problem-solving, and scientific communication under the guidance of university professors. The curriculum enriches and complements college preparation through experiences not typically available in high school. Students work on collaborative research projects, culminating in a written scientific paper and an oral presentation of their findings. The program aims to build skills in experimental design, laboratory instrumentation, mathematical modeling, data analysis, and the engineering design process. Students often work in small teams, fostering collaboration and shared problem-solving. An online Research Prep course is offered to all finalists and alternates to prepare them for university-level research.

What a typical day looks like

Students work with their mentors from Monday through Thursday, typically from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with a one-hour lunch break. Evenings and weekends include community and recreational activities organized by residential advisors.
